Another small step…

Today my LLC package arrived! I posted pics on the Personal Stuff page for everyone to view.

I am still waiting for the DBA to finalize. While I like the Graphic Design Element LLC, I still want my logo and business to be Design Element. I am hoping that now that I have confirmed that Design Elements (plural) has moved to Florida and changed their name to Design Principles, I will get my DBA without any hassles from the state government.

I will post again once the DBA is finished and I have filed all the business paperwork with the local township and county offices. Then, it will be completely official!

Thank you for keeping up with me, faithful reader!

Long Time No “C”

Posted: January 7, 2012 in Daily Blog

I am still in the process of getting my LLC together. In about 10 days I should have everything finalized and be able to do business as an “Owner”!
I want to express my gratitude to my mother who makes so many things in my life possible because of her positive reinforcement and financial know-how.
Thank you to my teacher/mentor Cookie who continues to send me words of encouragement and who always gives me glowing recommendations with such enthusiasm!
My internship taught me independence and individuality. In your quiet way you showed me it’s good to be myself and that the work will come simply because people will like MY work. Thank you for that!
And, finally to the love of my life. You encouraged me to go back to school and find my passion. It has not been easy and I appreciate that you continue to be patient and support me no matter what!
So, faithful readers, wish me good fortune as I move forward with my dream!

First job

Today was Design Element’s first pitch to ‘our’ first client! I was so excited and nervous!

I pitched three logo designs that I made from sketches and made sure to research online to make sure they weren’t close to existing brands.

I will post the sketches, the progression of ideas and the three logos I pitched after the final logo is approved.

The client said that he was surprised by the level of creativity and the professional presentation! I told him it is because I truly enjoy what I do.

While I am far from my “dream” goal of either working at or owning my own graphic design house, today gave me a taste of what I want. I could see my dream right in front of me!

So, faithful readers, we are on our way… C

Simply strong

While looking at different blogs to write about for class, I came across this post about a really neat graphic designer:

His designs are so strong and simple. It made me realize that I need to reach inside and find that conviction. The thing that I am most passionate about can drive my work as well.

I only have 3 classes left and I will finish a degree! While it may not seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, it is a major accomplishment in my life. I am so grateful to Carlos for supporting me and being understanding during the entire process.

I could not have imagined coming this far in such a short period of time. I was devastated when I was laid off. Now, I am so thankful. Don’t get me wrong, I really need a job and I have been pounding the pavement every day since. But, I am so appreciative of this chance to do something I love.

I hope your dreams become reality, too, faithful readers… C

Too funny

Doing my blog homework today I came across the funniest video spoof of Poker Face by Lady Gaga. These guys really are too great!

I would really like to work in a place that can come up with and do something like that. It’s great to take business and designing seriously. But, it’s also great not to take yourself too seriously.

So, this spurned me on to find more…

I hope these tickled your funny bones, faithful readers… C

As with anything in life, it is good to get the advice of wise and experienced people around you. But, it is also true that you have to make your own decisions and live with the consequences.

So, yesterday I made the decision to work with my intern boss and finally make a decision on the web domain. Since I want this to grow into my own business (either freelance or more) I decided to go with the website.

The words “Graphic Design” get over 2 million hits a month on Google alone and having those words in my domain could potentially help give me a stronger presence on the internet down the road.

I will be working with my intern boss in the next few weeks to design my website and get it up and running. Until then, there is a temporary “quick template” from the host and it has my contact information, including one of the new emails! It is really strange having my own email address that I created.

Now, I am one step closer to my dream. I have a logo and I have chosen what I want to specialize in. Branding, logo design, illustrations and web design. I want to be a designer/artist. I don’t want to be an expert in code or computers, even though I am sure I could. I want to use my art to make a difference, whether it be online, on a computer or on canvas/paper.

So, faithful readers, I hope you are enjoying the journey… C

The search continues…

I still haven’t made a hard decision on my new website name. The president of AIGA Blue Ridge suggests I use, however, most of my research online says I should use graphicdesign-element. com because it includes the keywords “graphic design” that would get my site over 2 million hits a month.

Plus, on top of that, I’m getting very discouraged in my work search. I have been applying to a minimum of 2 jobs a week with an average of  7 jobs per week for 1 year and 5 months now. I have gotten 4 interviews in all that time.

I am praying and hoping now that I am working with the Kaplan Career Services things will start to turn around fast. My unemployment runs out in 2 weeks. It is a very scary time and I don’t know if I should be spending money on a website/hosting.

So, faithful reader, what would you do? C
